The Cultural Values of Navratri
Honouring creation
Through the worship of Shakti and the nine forms of Navadurga, Navratri honours feminine power as a source of creation, strength, and compassion.

Conquering inner demons
Navratri can be understood as an inner journey: moving from inertia (Tamas), through passion and energy (Rajas), towards purity, balance, and clarity (Sattva). The tenth day symbolises going beyond our limitations—transcendence.

Mindful living and fasting are traditional practices through which some people cultivate discipline and awareness. The festival can also be a time to reflect on the ten senses and the mind, Preparing body & mind for rest of the days to come where body does not need food naturally.

Aligning with nature
Solstice transition period (changes in nature), it’s good to align with nature to yield the benefits & co-operation from nature by seasonal fasting, sattvic food (pure light vegetarian diet) & body clock resets that help the human body adapt smoothly to changing weather.

Sharad Navratri marks the transition from the heavy monsoon season into autumn honouring earth’s fertility, new agricultural cycles & sowing of fresh crops.

Unity in diversity
Navratri is widely celebrated in different ways across India, reflecting the country’s rich regional traditions:

· Eastern India, including West Bengal: Durga Puja.

· Gujarat and other parts of western India: Garba and Dandiya.

· Southern India: regional forms of worship, including havan and prayers for the wellbeing of oneself and others.

2. Empowering Women Through Navratri

Traditionally, Indian culture used to consider the feminine as important as the masculine if not more. Only because of repeated invasions, the situation in the society has changed over the centuries. The first thing that invaders laid their hands upon was your wife and your daughter. So, we started confining them to the house, for safety reasons. What was done for safety became a standard practice after some time. Now that India is a free nation, it is time for us to relook at that.

The feminine will truly be empowered only if the whole of humanity is empowered by balance. If there is strife in society, naturally, man will dominate. Only in a balanced and stable society will women be able to explore all that they are capable of. Very few societies today can claim that their women are finding full expression.

Equal opportunity and earned trust
It’s a privilege to be born as women in this era thanks to technology. We have come to a place where technology has created a physical space where men and women can participate in equal measure. Opportunity should be fair, and positions of responsibility should be supported by competence and trust.

A woman’s worth goes beyond economics
A woman's worth should not be measured solely by how much money she earns or whether she participates in the corporate climb. Working should be driven by personal choice, economic necessity, not by societal pressure that devalues nurturing, art, music or raising children. should equally honor non-economic dimensions of life.

If we want our lives to be beautiful, the feminine has to find its rightful place in society. We need to create a society where the feminine aspects of life – music, art, aesthetics – are as important as economics, science, and technology.

Respect must extend beyond festival days
Celebrating Women’s Day or Navratri has little meaning if women are not treated with dignity throughout the year. As the Telugu saying in this reflection reminds us: “Normal days lo adavalanu himsinchi, Women’s Day, Navratri lo wishes cheppadam thappu sir!” In other words, it is wrong to mistreat women on ordinary days and offer them wishes only on special occasions.

The Mahabharata offers a powerful prompt for reflection: when a woman needs protection, should social conventions, morality & ethics take precedence over humanity? Choose compassion and courage. Be humane - be like Krishna, rather than remaining a silent Bhishma. This is a personal interpretation offered for reflection.

3. What Navratri Has Taught Me
Looking back on my experience of celebrating Navratri while growing up, I recognise several ways in which the observance has shaped me.

Fasting and awareness
· It encouraged me in taking charge of 10 senses and 1 mind, and to reflect on ego, anger, greed, and jealousy.

· It helped me practise being present and aware.

· It encouraged alertness and attentiveness.

For me, fasting has also been a way to experience inner stillness and silence. Fasting is not suitable for everyone; it should be approached with care and in a way that respects individual health needs.

Physical wellbeing
· Detox

· Cleared my headspace

Psychological wellbeing
· A chance to declutter my thoughts.

· Increased levels of exuberance & flexibility.

· A way to return to reality and regain perspective.

· A calmer, more focused state of mind.

Spiritual practice
Transcendence – Going beyond limits

Couple of years ago had to include mantra chanting & sadhana into my regular Navratri rituals where I had to sit for longer hours with my spine erect.

Initially I struggled but later it helped me in sitting still while meditating for longer hours, got to know that it is attaining Asana Siddhi.

Later realized it takes certain amount of discipline, commitment & dedication to maintain what’s been attained.

Celebration, devotion, and surrender
· Celebration makes me feel more joyful.

· Devotion deepens my bond with Devi.

· Spiritual practice brings me closer to the divine and helps me let go of what no longer reflects my true self.

4. Resilience, Self-Care, and Inner Strength
These practices have helped me become more resilient and have strengthened my patience and tolerance. I am someone who prefers to do one thing at a time. Although I tried to multitask, I often found it difficult to manage everything effortlessly.

After a sudden demise of my father had to handle situations at home, before that I didn’t even know what responsibility & sacrifice was. I’ve put my mother & sister’s wellbeing above mine forgot to prioritize & nurture myself. Going out & working was easier than handling family situations at least for me it was.

It’s very important for a woman to be stronger - Strength is not about being stronger than someone else; it is about being prepared, capable, and compassionate towards yourself, because once born as girl in this wide world, must meet both praise & blame have to handle situations at home, work, nurture herself so that she will be able to nurture the life around her, life is unpredictable, can knock you down any time in many unexpected ways. Better be prepared to face things alone if needed. Build habits that strengthen both body and mind:

· A simple walk.

· Jog or run, if appropriate for you.

· Practice yoga.

· Learn martial arts or another form of self-protection.

These practices can help us pause before anger takes over. Decisions made in anger may have lasting consequences, and some harm cannot be undone. When life becomes difficult, return to calm resolve:

Know yourself. Believe in yourself. Keep your calm and walk gracefully.

If you want no else to go through what you’ve gone through – heal, nurture yourself, educate & help others.

5. Progress may be slow, but do not give up or compromise your integrity. Marriage is not a solution for escaping the problems you are facing.
